Candle magick is a classic way to cast spells and work your will. While all you truly need is a candle of any kind and your energy and focus, it can often be helpful to add oils, herbs, crystals, and more to your candle spell to enhance the energy and make it easier to accomplish your goals.

Basic step by step instructions for a candle spell:

Set up your altar or work space however you normally do. (If you don’t have a typical method, simply clear a solid flat surface of any clutter or distractions and give everything a good wipe down.)
You’ll want to make your space as safe as possible. Beeswax is very malleable when it’s warm, so you can form the bottom of the candle to fit most candle holders, or melt the bottom a little and securely stick it to a plate. Just make sure it won’t fall while burning.
Lay out your materials and bless or charge them with your own energy. All the materials are charged during production, but adding your own energy to the blend helps more strongly attune the spell to your will.
Anoint the candle with the oil. You can anoint only the bottom, only the top, all over, or use it to draw on sigils and runes. A little goes a long way, so don’t overdo it. The oil is flammable!
Add the herbs to the candle. A common method is to roll the candle in the herbs (the oil will help them stick) but you could also sprinkle them around the base of the candle. If you choose to sprinkle the herbs on top of the candle while it burns, make sure to use the tiniest of pinches at a time; too much at once could extinguish the flame, or it could ignite and cause an issue.
Light the candle and speak your spell aloud.
When your time is up, extinguish the candle in your usual method. If you have materials remaining, save it for a follow-up, another spell, or dispose of in a safe and sustainable way.

Tips To Enhance Your Spell

Add other tokens like charms, jewelry, or crystals around the candle to infuse the energy of the spell. Keep them with you as talismans after the candle burns out to sustain the spell.
Add the candle spell to a larger spell or ritual as a boost towards your outcome.

Candle Safety

Always keep candles away from flammable materials like curtains, paper, or books.
Never leave a burning candle unattended.
Place candles on a heat-resistant surface or in a proper candle holder.
Keep candles out of reach of children and pets.
Make sure candles are placed in a draft-free area to prevent uneven burning or flare-ups.
Don’t burn candles for more than 4 hours at a time.
Trim the wick to about 1/4 inch before lighting to prevent excessive flames.
Have baking soda and a damp cloth nearby in case a fire erupts. Never use water as it can cause hot wax to splatter and the oil to more quickly spread the fire.
